– Technology was established in the early nineties in the United States and its use in Latin America increased in 2001.
– Stamping improves asphalt pavement life, reduces maintenance costs and provides aesthetic features to the asphalt bearing layer.
– The stamped asphalt allows delineating with color places like safety zones in schools, crosswalks, bike lanes, road markings, parking spaces and exclusive parking according to the 7600 Act.
Costa Rica, Febrary 2015. Costa Rica is part of a select list of countries that has been using colored-stamped pavement since 2006, a different alternative that makes it possible to substantially improve the finish of a road.
This technique has different implementation procedures, since it uses special flexible stainless steel molds that are reproduced on the surface of the asphalt layer. This can achieve different designs of shapes, textures and colors that ensure a nice finish of a road.
This technology helped solve the problem of using paver stones in the central area of Alajuela, where traffic had many difficulties due to deteriorating and detachment of existing parts. The solution to the problem occurred with a very affordable cost for the municipality of the canton.
Other works that have used this technique are at Martino Hotel in La Garita de Alajuela and the main entrance to the Technical High School in Carrizal de Alajuela, where it was possible to shape and beautify the existing asphalt pavement.
Used correctly, color asphalt can be successfully applied in bearing layers of high traffic. Its maintenance consists in the application of special paint on the already printed surface; which will refresh the colors and increase the rolling resistance for periods of up to five years of continuous use.
The route may even be revamped and the colors originally used can be renewed without structural changes of the pavement.
According to Engineer Luis Fernando Gutiérrez, Constructora MECO Asphalt Regional Manager “It is essential that asphalt is printed on a layer of asphalt mixture of at least 5 cm thick that meets rigorous technical specifications and is supported on a pavement structure designed for the traffic conditions and use that will exist. It is a different and cheaper option compared to other sensitive materials we have in the market when it comes to decorating with different shapes and colors in a new or rehabilitated surface.”
The print color asphalt has allowed many countries to use it to delineate bikeways, signaling exclusive parking, preventive areas near hospitals, schools and crosswalks; so that they warn the driver about the care he should have in the place. Furthermore, this technology is applicable in residential projects, condominiums, access to hotels, and commercial and business centers parking.
This technique has been well accepted in the United States and European countries, and has spread to other countries like Australia, Canada, Iceland and China.
Recently, the company Pattern Paving, specialized in the manufacture of molds, equipment and paint for this type of work, chose Costa Rica to host its annual meeting to update its engineers and specialists in each country, in terms of progress on the issue. The event at the Hotel Martino Resort in La Garita de Alajuela brought together professionals and contractors from the United States, Germany, Iceland, Chile, Italy and Costa Rica.
Environmentally-friendly constructive advantages of color stamped asphalt
The color stamped asphalt allows rapid execution of work and a drying time is only 4 hours to enable the pavement for traffic after completion of the process. The paints used are water based and there are no solvents of any kind, which means a friendly relationship with the environment.
The costs of using this technology are very competitive and cheaper compared to similar finish materials and shape, like the concrete pavers for example.
“There are countless uses of color stamped asphalt, if solutions are sought for safer roads, good weather adaptation and very attractive roads. The color stamped asphalt can also be used on existing or new floor, depending on the recommended technique” explained Adriano Martino, company representative of Asfaltos Estampados, company running works in Costa Rica in a strategic alliance with Meco S.A. using materials and paints patented by Pattern Paving.
