San Agustín Moves Forward: Connectivity Driving Community Transformation
Constructora Meco is advancing the comprehensive upgrade of 8.6 kilometers of the rural USU25N roadway, connecting the El Litoral Highway with the district of San Agustín in Usulután, El Salvador. The project is improving mobility between historically productive communities, helping stimulate agricultural trade while enhancing the quality of life for hundreds of local families.
The works involve a full structural intervention of the corridor, including earthworks, pavement construction, drainage systems, concrete structures and road signage. More than 4,200 cubic meters of hot-mix asphalt have been placed, supported by a robust granular base designed to deliver a durable and safe roadway capable of accommodating future growth in the region.
One of the project’s main challenges has been executing construction works along an existing unpaved corridor with pre-existing structures, which required demolition, soil stabilization and major hydraulic works. The integration of both major and minor drainage systems ensures long-term functionality and protection against severe weather events, strengthening the corridor’s resilience.
With an investment exceeding US$10 million and a construction timeline of 300 calendar days, the project—scheduled for completion in March 2026—will not only improve traffic flow but also support the economic, agricultural and social development of communities such as El Jocote, Villa España and the urban center of San Agustín. Through projects like this, Meco continues to deliver infrastructure that strengthens regional connectivity and drives sustainable development.
Founded in 1977 by Ángel Américo Cerdas and his son Carlos Cerdas Araya, Constructora Meco has grown into one of the most prominent Costa Rican construction companies operating across Latin America. Today the company delivers projects in Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Colombia, and employs more than 6,500 professionals across the region.
